STORY

Fine jewellery studio Liv Luttrell specialises in the creation of exquisite original editions and bespoke designs, all handmade in the UK.

Liv trained in Gemmology at the Gemmological Institute of America and at the bench as a goldsmith in London, building on her passion for fine art, abstract art and sculpture. This specialist understanding of materials and traditional techniques compliments Liv’s design process, allowing her to work very closely with the skilled craftsmen who bring her sculptural designs to life.

Liv has always been inspired by the works of her grandmother Rosemary, a prolific, self-taught fine artist who specialises in bold abstracts. “She has always had this incredible ‘gut instinct’ relationship with form, which I aspire to,” explains Liv. “When I’m at my most creative, that is how I’m working. I’m most at home with abstract form, and devoted to the sensuality of shapes that have substance and form; my medium has always been 3D.”

Sustainability is at the core of Liv Luttrell’s practice and has been since the studio was founded in 2016. All materials are sourced in the UK and recycled gold and silver are used wherever possible. Diamonds and gemstones are all responsibly sourced by a network of accredited London specialists.

PHILOSOPHY

Liv Luttrell never collectivises her work – every original edition and bespoke piece is designed both to stand alone and to become part of her ongoing creative exploration of materials and finishes.

The unifying thread is Liv’s lifelong appreciation for abstract form, sculptural designs and clean lines that is rooted in family history; every piece is imbued with an instinctive organic quality and elegance. Liv aims to maintain a consistent style across every original edition she creates. “I design just as much for the people who already own a piece of my jewellery as for clients who have just discovered my work. I want them all to be excited to see what's coming next because a thread of progression and change runs through my work. I also believe in creating jewellery that’s not ‘trend driven’; I hope my pieces will be as appealing and interesting ten years’ from now.”

Liv’s London showroom sets the tone for her design ethos. This luxurious private warehouse space can be found in the heart of the City of London, its minimal aesthetic given energy thanks to her own personal art collection, anchored by a selection of abstracts by her grandmother. Clients visit by appointment for a private meeting with Liv to begin a collaborative creative process for every design.

Sustainability has been important to Liv Luttrell as a guiding principle since she launched her studio.

Every aspect of craftsmanship is done by hand in London and around the UK; Liv praises the Zen-like attention to detail of the goldsmiths she works with, appreciating their skill on both a personal and professional level. Gold, silver and platinum are from sources managed by Fairtrade, the Responsible Jewellery Council or fully recycled sources, wherever possible. Diamonds and gemstones are responsibly sourced by Liv’s network of specialists; these include gems from Gemfields and diamond supply chains accredited by the Responsible Jewellery Council.

 PROCESS

“Techniques are honed over many years, integrating themselves into muscle memory. There is no short-cut for hand-making fine jewellery.”

Traditional goldsmith training informs the intriguing and intuitive shapes that Liv designs and her craftsmen create. The creative process starts with sketching, as Liv gathers shapes, concepts and stories. Whether Liv is working on original editions or bespoke pieces, this initial process of research and reflection then leads to the same dynamic three-dimensional process. “All my designs really start to take form when I am working at the bench, with a range of materials, to make maquettes and samples,” Liv explains, “giving me a feeling for the shape, volume and weight of a piece. It's not how most people do it, but tactility is very important to me.”

Once the maquettes are approved, next comes technical drawing and a hand-painted representation of each piece, created in the classic high jewellery style by Liv using gouache and watercolour. Liv’s team of craftsmen then expertly and painstakingly transform the final design into an exquisite physical piece. Liv’s attention to detail extends to the presentation of her pieces, which are all housed in contemporary, individually tailored boxes, handmade in workshops in Suffolk in the UK.

 BESPOKE

“It is without exception a wonderful privilege to share the emotional journey involved in bringing a unique design to life.”

Liv Luttrell collaboration with Fuli Gemstones

Liv works closely with individual clients to create bespoke pieces in her signature sculptural aesthetic. These unique designs evolve from a vision shared with the client and are often created to capture and celebrate a moment of magic in life.

The bespoke process is uniquely tailored to each individual client, starting with a complimentary design consultation at Liv Luttrell’s private studio warehouse space – by appointment only – or, if preferred, via Zoom. Subsequent appointments, as a bespoke piece is being created, can take place in person or online. Upon completion, clients all receive a beautiful painting of their finished design, created in the classic high jewellery style by Liv using gouache and watercolour.

If you would like to discuss a bespoke commission please reach out via email and we will be in contact as soon as possible. enquiries@livluttrell.com
